Exploring form, message, craft, typography, architecture and building through the re-purposing of construction tools to cast typography

This collaboration with Jorge Rigau, FAIA Arquitectos was for the design of a fountain in the main plaza of Vieques island, located to the east of Puerto Rico. As part of the concept of the overall design, there was an area dedicated to the expression of the relationship between the historical voices of the town and those who carried out actions. As such, the words Voces and Brazos were selected as the text to be used. A darby, usually used to smoothen out concrete surfaces, is repurposed into a typographic stamp, that once pressed into the concrete, leaves the impression of the words. The process itself is performed by Jaime Suárez.

Renderings testing the typography. Originally depth was seen as a factor in the creation of the letters, but later, due to restrictions of the chosen medium, all letters were converted to be unidimensional.

A darby was manipulated and transformed into a typographic stamp.
