PLL Back in Fairfield For Another Go-Around

Lacrosse fans everywhere were overjoyed when the Premier Lacrosse League came to fruition in 2018. Lacrosse legend Paul Rabil and his brother Mike Rabil founded this brand new, modern professional lacrosse league, which took a completely unique approach compared to the Major Lacrosse League, which the PLL absorbed just two years later.  

That unique approach was a touring model for the season schedule, organized by weeks almost as if it were a National Football League schedule. However, each week’s events would be hosted at a different city within the United States, aiming to include all fans from all different parts of the country.

In 2022, it was announced that Fairfield, Conn. would be joining in on the fun, becoming its very own host city on this touring schedule. Hosted right in the gates of Fairfield University, Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium officially welcomed the Premier Lacrosse League. 

The 2023 schedule saw Fairfield re-entering the fray once again. PLL games this season will be hosted in Rafferty Stadium on July 14 and 15, 2023. 

On Friday, July 14 at 6 p.m., the Waterdogs will take on the Whipsnakes. After that game wraps up, the Archers will take the field against the Redwoods at 8:30 p.m. to close out the night. 

The next day, Saturday, July 15, the 6 p.m. matchup will see the Cannons Lacrosse Club take on the Chrome. Finally, the 8:30 p.m. matinee will feature the Atlas Lacrosse Club vs. the Chaos to round out the weekend. 

After the weekend comes to a close in Fairfield, the PLL and its All-Star voted players will travel down to Louisville, Ky. for the 2023 All-Star Game, which features PLL “veterans” vs. “rising stars” (players with three or fewer years of professional lacrosse experience). 

At the time of this writing (before Week Four), the standings among the eight teams remain fairly gridlocked, with no team able to win all their first three games. With there being a four-way tie by a record in the top four spots, it comes down to score differential, which the Chaos lead in at +5, and the Archers fall second at +3.

We photographed and edited a stop-animation documentation of the development of Popular Inc.’s Urban Hub Project in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. It is located in the area known as “La Milla de Oro”.

Custom water-tight camera cases and building clamps were designed and built for the project. Photography was carried out between October 2015 and May 2018.

En Rieles, exhibited from 2007 thru 2010 in Banco Popular de Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan Building, promoted the benefits of installing a TRAM system in the city of San Juan.

The exhibit, divided in sections, covers historical train-related themes and presents contemporary urban issues. Means of representation range from traditional exhibition panels, to interactive touch screens, sculptures, 3-D Glasses, environmental interventions, interactive walls, and even a train model with a futuristic look at what our city would be like with a TRAM.

Fitting five centuries and a city in 18”x 30”

The New School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico, with a grant from the American Express Foundation, produced an architectural map of old San Juan, the first of to identify both its structures and public spaces including its patios, nooks and other hidden spaces. The map –edited in Spanish and English- is geared to a wide range of audiences including children, tourists and those who know and have studied the city.

For too long the historical center of our capital city has lacked a guide that explains to the public the history and merits of the buildings within the walled district. Conscious of this need, Polytechnic University took on the task of documenting San Juan’s colonial heritage, drawing and photographing some of the best examples. Students and professors have developed detailed drawings and informative texts that are included in the map/guide. With the map, visitors to the city can walk through Old San Juan at their own pace and define their visit individually.

Map designed to inform the visitors of Old San Juan of important inner spaces that are not visible from the sidewalk or street.

Activity made to present the map and its contents to several schools in the area of Old San Juan.

A series of faculty members of the Architecture school of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico provided tours, teaching about the importance of each of the spaces.

Marker designed to identify those building that inside have an open space.

A radiology firm wanted to invest in a bit of advertising. After evaluating the matter, it was suggested to them to re-brand the envelopes which hold the exams. These are the best portable way of advertising, since they cannot be folded, clients hold out under their arms, and end up in every doctor’s office. As part of the project, the nameplate and stationery were updated as well.

URBAN WALLS CONCEIVED AS TEXT

The author/photographer relies on the lens to enhance an appreciation of the contemporary urban experience by framing quotidian images and their messages, as they appear in well known places around the city of San Juan. Uprooted from their context, images are woven into a narrative of their own. An exhibit followed the publication; examples that had already vanished were acknowledged as such in the exhibit.

TELLING AN INVISIBLE STORY

A small architecture studio is awarded Puerto Rico’s National Architecture Design Award. What better reason to re-brand the studio’s visual strategy?

A series of conversations with the Architects led to the understanding of their need: communicating with larger and more serious clients. As such, the visual identity is brought together by a conservative consistency rather than a flashy design language. The blueprints on the designs are taken from the studio’s work, with the business cards showcasing the Barranquitas’ Public Library, winner of the prestigious award.

100 Preguntas que nos hemos hecho sobre Puerto Rico

Concerned with how readers often fail to acknowledge and ultimately disregard the relevance of student ideas, reducing them to image-making, an Architecture School’s Dean struggled to find the best way to showcase such work.

The School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico decided to celebrate its 10th anniversary by publishing and exhibiting the most important student work made so far. As structure for the publication, it was decided to present the projects in question format, underlining the importance of inquiry over image. One hundred entries (grouped and coded by theme) predetermined the book’s format and that of the exhibit. Elegance (it is about architecture) and informality (but also about students) had to be conveyed.

NARRATIVE AS REMEMBERING

This exhibit commemorates the life and works of Cuban Architect Adriano Rogés. The project intended to thread a narrative of this creative designer’s story through the juxtaposition of language, anecdotes, images, physical objects, and environmental graphics.

The curatorial strategy was to present standard biographical content through the lens of four different viewpoints: The Architect, The Landscape Architect, The Work, and the Family Man. The exhibit opened on March 17th of 2006 in the Guaynabo office of Jardincentro.

Shout Out! Clothing is based on the concept of customizable, interactive apparel and accessories that facilitate and promote self expression. T-shirts for men, women, and children that have detachable letters, numbers and symbols that can be rearranged on a circle message area on the front of the shirt to display whatever you want to. In addition to the circle on the front, there’s also a strip on the back to display a message such as a name.

A new dean takes over the younger of two architecture schools. His first order of business? Host an opening lecture to communicate initial ideas, intentions and plans. The event had to be publicly advertised. Radiographic language was chosen to allow for the most direct message with the least amount of insult.

A canvas to honor the work of others

For 10 years American Paper Corp. had been running the Optimus design and printing awards. Recently, the awards had been embedded within Gráfica del Caribe, preventing them from establishing their own visual identity.

For the 11th awards, we were asked to create a new graphic voice and design the first stand-alone exhibit. A small gallery was identified, materials from the warehouse were recycled and some printing was done to ambient the location.

COLOR IN ART, COLOR AS LIFE

A retrospective must, of necessity, offer a survey of an artist’s career, while the exhibit’s catalogue highlights the most relevant aspects of her contribution to the arts within the period. We were selected by the Contemporary Art Museum to design both for artist Noemí Ruiz.

The publication, graphically designed to mimic the artists painting style, offers an examination of the artist’s large body of work—more than eight hundred pieces. As companion to the retrospective exhibit, it provided an extension for the exhibit beyond the walls of the museum.

VIEW FROM THE SCAFFOLD

San José was built between 1532 & 1735 as a conventual church for Dominican friars. It’s age, the ravages of time and the lack of timely preventative conservation work have had a harmful toll on it. Conservation will not be easy.

We were commissioned the design of a catalog and exhibit to explain the renovation process to the community, along with many of the archaeological, architectural and cultural discoveries that have been made. We devised a series of self-standing modules to hold the content of the exhibit. These were distributed through the space to allow visitors to enjoy a complete walk-around, while simultaneously providing exposure to all of the contents.

MUSICAL NOTATION GUIDES DESIGN

After exploring body movement for 80 years (ballet, flamenco, mime and modern dance), a leading Puerto Rican theater figure thought it fit—as her swan song—to collect her memorabilia in a publication, including artwork, set and costume designs, photos (portraits, live action), original programs, posters and press clippings. Widely admired, Gilda Navarra was a muse to many artists in America and Europe, as evidenced by myriad texts and images.

Music played an important role in Gilda’s signature pieces, usually developed for silent characters. The book was thus conceived as a musical piece itself. Its design is based on an ever­present pentagram, often clear, at times suggested or just implied. Because music provides graphic representations of silence—lacking in conventional language—these symbols become metaphors for different “times” in the artist’s ever­changing, transcendental oeuvre.

CAPTIONS AS FOUNDATIONS WITHIN A LAYOUT

Puerto Rico’s short history has equipped the island with a rich and detailed history of its construction sector, particularly in techniques and ways of building. Our design presents this record for the public’s enjoyment.

The book’s size called for a layout where readers could read, learn, reflect, enjoy, share, or just use as quick reference. Image captions, traditionally attached in proximity to the content they represent, here portray a narrative of their own, not only complementing the visual, but also providing a secondary text that can be read in conjunction with the rest of the composition or in an independent manner. The jacket hints at the never ending nature of the construction process.

RE-PURPOSING AS A MEANS TO CREATION

This project, a new fountain for the town plaza in Vieques, was a collaboration with Jorge Rigau, FAIA Architects and Jaime Suárez, ceramist, explored form, message, craft, typography and architecture.

A darby, usually used to smoothen out concrete surfaces, is repurposed into a typographic stamp, that once pressed into the concrete, leaves the impression of the words. The words Voces and Brazos were used.

HIDDEN LETTERS SAY WELCOME

This collaboration with Jorge Rigau, FAIA Arquitectos aimed at providing a signature door to an already signature home. The Spivak family inquired for a graphic gesture to welcome their guests at the entrance of the home. Typography was used as inspiration for the design and specification of the finished solution. Wood, steel and cortén steel became the tools of process and exploration.

DESIGN ENABLES ADVOCACY

Puerto Rico has a 20th century system of irrigation channels that distribute water to homes and farmlands. Still in operation today, to most they remain unknown. Jorge Rigau FAIA conceived two pilot projects to garner support for the development of Isabela’s irrigation channels as a key ecotourism attraction.

We were tasked with the graphic development of both pilot projects.  Oversized words were “sprinkled” along the canal to underline key questions, typographic elements were inserted within the landscape. A temporary, movable exhibition was handed over to the local community for further promotion

En Rieles, exhibited from 2007 thru 2010 in Banco Popular de Puerto Rico’s Old San Juan Building, promoted the benefits of installing a TRAM system in the city of San Juan.

The exhibit, divided in sections, covers historical train-related themes and presents contemporary urban issues. Means of representation range from traditional exhibition panels, to interactive touch screens, sculptures, 3-D Glasses, environmental interventions, interactive walls, and even a train model with a futuristic look at what our city would be like with a TRAM.

ARCHITECTURE UNFOLDS

Every year, the Colegio de Arquitectos y Arquitectos Paisajistas awards the Ricardo Alegría medals to individuals who are not directly related to the discipline but who have contributed to it in a way that can be evidenced.

We were asked to a design a the medal to be handed out in the naming ceremonies. Our composition represents the larger social context inside which architecture unfolds. The recipient crosses the architectural field (diagonal glass), leaving his mark (smaller aluminum triangle). Typographically the initials of the award are embedded, with a lower case r on the left side of the diagonal glass and an upper case A on it’s right side. Fabrication by Roberto Pérez.

CONTEXT GUIDES BRAND STRATEGY

Any identity project for a government agency is hard: the outcome must speak to a broad audience while its creation is guided by a particular political perspective. They rarely last…

When the State Historic Preservation Office of Puerto Rico chose us to rebrand it, we aimed at creating an identity that could survive the test of time. Spanish-Colonial influence meets a modern detail in a logo composition that uses window louvers to communicate the pluralized setting in which SHPO locally operates. Typographic offers enough contrast in language and statement, while abstract patterns the complete graphic language.

LOCATION IS ESSENTIAL

American Airlines was looking to recognize a group of local employees through a photographic exhibition in a wall in their terminal at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. One requirement was established: employees were to be photographed in their exact work stations.
We collaborated in the creation of the images with Eric Jukelevics, and work with the airline to locate the image gallery in the main atrium of the terminal, using a series of large sun lit windows as canvases. We made the images visible to the passing by travelers.

PIXELATING FASHION

3M, bouncing off the success of its fashion products, became one of the primary sponsors of Puerto Rico’s High Fashion Week to be held in the Convention Center. The event’s sponsorship included the furnishing of 7 murals.

Having worked with 3M before, a strategy was developed to directly impact the convention center’s walls. Post-its, Scotch Tapes, and other related 3M brand materials were used in the creation of these graphic interventions. A carpet-graphic was designed to impact the environment in a fashion-like way, providing a run-way for guests to walk on.

Goya Foods celebrates its 75th birthday with the publishing of a book containing the documented history of the founding family and the growth of the company into the national conglomerate it is today.

We designed the publication as a set of templates that could be rearranged as the content of the book was placed and the images were married to the narrative. We were also responsible for the photographic documentation of the current state of some of the company’s properties.

The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, a 66 year old institution, was looking to update its 20+ year old visual identity to better communicate with its student body and within the contemporary academic climate in Puerto Rico.

We approached the project in terms of its systematic posibilities. It was never about just a trademark or specific colors, but as a system of various marks, typographies, proportions, colors, standards and symbolisms that could be transmuted from use to use and still belong to the design system.

REMEMBERING BY ENGRAVING

To honor the work of employees who have devoted more than 25 years of service, Banco Popular of Puerto Rico came to us for the design of a mural where the names could be exhibited and remembered. Only one requirement: each employee must be remembered with an individual plaque.

A mix of aluminum, stainless steel, translucent resin, seaweed, and frosted acrylic were used in the design of the composition.

LABELING AS A MEANS OF URBAN IDENTIFICATION

Jorge Rigau, FAIA Architects was commissioned the design of a Fine Arts School in the urban center of Hormigueros. In turn, we were hired to design a sign to identify the building.

Based on the architects’ proposed design—with a series of perforations to the main façade—we designed a multi-level die-cut sign to blend with into the design language.

Goya was about to publish its 75th Anniversary book, and for its unveiling, it to invite the guests without showing much about it.

We designed the invitation by taking the cover’s design and stripping the color down to only texture. Guests received this delicate piece as a hint of what was to come.

IN APOLOGY TO RUIZ BELVIS

This architectural project was commissioned to Jorge Rigau, FAIA Architects by the Municipality of Hormigueros to design an urban ramp to connect different levels of town. The problem was reinterpreted as a garden that honors one of the town’s most important historic figures: Segundo Ruiz Belvis, who – ironically – was forced by Spanish authorities to live in exile.

We were commissioned the design of a steel wainscot that “apologizes” to Ruiz Belvis. Simultaneously, it acknowledges other nationalities from the Caribbean that, in recent years, have been forced to leave their homeland and settle elsewhere…

IDENTIFYING A CULTURAL MARKER

Since 1965, Popular’s headquarters have been in Popular Center. This building’s name, while known, had never been visible in the structure. We were tasked with materializing this abstract yet culturally known marker.

We analyzed the bank’s historic signage projects. Letterforms were documented, contrasted, re-contextualized as a set of  custom letters drawn for the building, and ultimately produced as signage.

TAKING THE LOGO TO A GYM

AIREKO, a construction and construction management company, hired us to update its mark (originally drawn by ID Group) in anticipation of its 50th anniversary.

Knowing that the spirit of the original design was already too established to warrant a dramatic change, we decided to take the word mark to the gym. We reworked each letter by standardizing their typographic gestures and geometry, thus aligning them together to a more cohesive feel.

The Puerto Rico State Historic Preservation Office asked us to design new visual editorial standards for the Office’s book series.

Investigaciones Históricas by Adolfo de Hostos, the second volume, includes the reprint of two investigations: the archaeological dig of the ruins at Caparra and the research into the possible landing place of Christopher Columbus in Puerto Rico. This is a re-print of an original from 1938, but re-designed with contemporary typography, larger images and an extended appendix.

SUBSTRACTIVE TURNS ADDITIVE

Model Offset Printing, one of the island’s most prestigious printers, expanded beyond the traditional offset offerings and began working with HP Indigo machines, mailings and online marketing platforms. As such, the CMYK color model, root of its brand, was falling short.

We updated the visual gamut of its graphic language to an CMYK+RBG palette, thus aligning the brand’s gestures to the commercial expansion in services.

Goya de Puerto Rico, having just celebrated its 75th anniversary, published a book which narrated the company’s growth. With such research done, GOYA further wished to the offer a glimpse into its history, this time to its local headquarters’ visitors.

With myriad materials and technologies, we designed and built a timeline-style mural where visitors and employees can read, appreciate, and enjoy the company’s history through imagery, videos and anecdotes.

ArqPoli Brand Identity Redesign

In 2007 we rebranded The School of Architecture at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico as a center from which shifting points of view—multi-layered camouflage— are experienced by students and faculty alike.

The School’s updated identity constitutes a metaphor for an institution on whose shoulders rests the responsibility of defining strategies for the future. A system of three graphic gestures—sketches—becomes a branding device, one highlighted by its associations with action, intervention and ideation. Shifting points of view, experienced by students and faculty alike, are represented through a multi-layered brand approach where a changing canvas grounds the hand-drawn typographic mark. Process becomes the core idea. Consistent change anchors the brand’s system.

A NEW DRESS FOR A SWEET SIXTEEN

Super Bowl XXX was the seedbed for the idea of a stand-alone browser that would ingest, organize and batch-caption digital photographs. Two years later, Camera Bits’ software, Photo Mechanic, was already embraced for its workflow, speed and efficiency. Today it is integral to the workflow of more than 35,000 photographers.

In 2012 we collaborated with Momenta Group and updated the visual language of the company’s brands.

Letterforms as a canvas for imagery

In May 2012, La Casa del Libro curated the exhibit Ars Libris. The pieces that were displayed, donated by various artists, were sold to raise funds for the institution.

As collaborators of the museum, we designed the promotional materials, catalogue and assisted with the exhibit’s layout. Visual containers were designed to accommodate graphic details of the different works of art.

Puerto Rico’s KM 0

Where do our road measurements begin? With Jorge Rigau FAIA Architects, we designed Puerto Rico’s kilometer 0 marker, located next to Plaza Colón in Old San Juan (where the original Spanish entrance of the city had been located in the fortifications of the 17th century).

The bronze marker has become an icon in the city, with tour guides now using it as a meeting point for much of the stories told.

B. Fernández & Hnos., a family owned business, celebrates its 125 anniversary. As part of the festivities, the company wanted to share its story through a short video documentary.

We were selected by Populicom to bring these anecdotes to life. We collaborated with the company in digitizing its historical archive, interviewing the living heirs of the family, creating a timeline of key anecdotes and in editing all of the content into a cohesive story. We were in charge of the filming, interviewing and editing of the video.

COSMOLOGICAL BELIEFS TRANSLATE TO GRAPHIC DESIGN

Puerto Rico’s Jesuit order commissioned Jorge Rigau FAIA Architects the design of a columbarium with ecological characteristics to serve as resting place for some order’s priests. In turn, we were tasked with designing the graphic markers that would differentiate each of the tombs where the ashes would be deposited.

Through its architectural and graphic designs, the project’s physical form acts as a contemporary interpretation of the Jesuit’s tradition of making cosmological explanations through the use of concentric circles.

SIGNAGE FACILITATING MOVEMENT

El Colaboratorio, by Foundation for Puerto Rico, commissioned the design of a signage and wayfinding system for its Ciudadela location.

Using the design of its own brand language (colors and typography), we devised signs that marked specific locations while integrating into the space’s newly designed architecture. The project fulfills ADA public space requirements.

GRAPHIC MURALS AS SPACEMAKERS

Foundation for Puerto Rico created the co-working space El Colaboratorio to host various foundations that do work that benefits Puerto Rico. We were commissioned to give the space a graphic language through a series of visual murals that were sprinkled through the property.

Local themes, such as the Santurce trolley stops, Jaime Suárez’ El Totem or select daily scenes, were translated into visual cues for the murals’ creation.

GFR Media, as a Puerto Rican company, wished to promote local purchases for the Christmas season. With this in mind, it created a print and video campaign where it showcased a group of business owners thanking clients for their sponsorship.
Conceptualized with Antonio Álvarez of GFR’s Brandshare, we created this brand and visual language to serve as a canvas for many documented messages.

OPENING A SPACE, MAKING COMMUNITY

B. Fernández & Hnos., having just remodeled its lobby, asked us to continue our collaboration, this time to update its employee lunch room.

Floors were changed, furniture added, luminaries replaced, color palettes updated, kitchen appliances renewed, and the main wall replaced with glass to open up the space to the company. A graphic mural, based on the company’s new branding, was added as decoration to the space.

RENOVATING A SPACE, SHOWCASING LEGACY

B. Fernández & Hnos., having just published its trajectory in a video documentary, wished to share its story in the headquarters’ lobby.

Our participation began with the design of timeline-style mural but quickly grew into a holistic project with spatial implications. Color palettes were created to balance the mood. New materials were introduced to warm a rather tall, cold space. Brand graphics were added for impact. Custom furniture allowed for a better use of space and visual rhythm through its graphic statements.

As part of the client’s lobby remodeling project, we were commissioned the design of a chair and ottoman where the company’s guests can sit while they wait to be called on. The design, derived from the company’s brand language, offers a contemporary touch to the 125 year old company.

The chairs, in mirror models, can be used individually or brought together, side by side, to work as a small sofa. An ottoman was designed to sit more people and complement the set. Eight chairs and two ottomans were produced.

As part of the brand redesign for El Gordito burger patties, we were tasked with updating the brand mascot’s artistic strokes. All parts were synthesized with one artistic language, made clearer, and streamlined for digital use.

His personality was extended with various poses, attires and traits to further his presence, such as in social media.

DESIGN FOR FLUIDITY AND AMPLITUDE

Puerto Rico’s Art Museum’s ActivArte serves as a visual arts teaching laboratory that promotes the active participation of its users through historic, social and aesthetic perspectives.
ActivArte’s new design, led by Jorge Rigau, FAIA Architects, reconceptualized the space through a sculptoric treatment of its floors and walls to highlight different content stations. Graphic design revealed and contrasted the relationships between art, science, nature, architecture and industrial design. Interactive elements and site specific artworks complemented the design strategies.

DESIGN FOR REUSE

Abbott Medical Optics in Añasco holds daily evaluation meetings to oversee the progress of the plant’s performance metrics. These conversations occur in front of a wall where data is manually posted and documented. We were asked to update the wall so that it can survive daily reuse.
We designed, using acriliprint technology, a modular system that can be easily cleaned with water, leaving no stains or deterioration behind. Visual depth was added with various levels and by using die cut letters.

We were tasked with the creation of the Del Campo brand, giving the name a dual purpose as a brand and as an element of syntax. We aligned the look-and-feel of the packages with a contemporary, white dominant design that stands out at the shelves.

SINGLE COLOR AS BRAND, PALETTE AS CATEGORIZATION

El Gordito, Puerto Rico’s best selling brand of burger patties, was looking to update its visual language and create a better differentiation amongst its own product lines. We were asked to collaborate, with an early decision to update and not redesign the packaging. The owner did not want to risk its market share.
Typographic treatments were updated, color palettes balanced and all photographs re-shot. The brand mascot was redrawn and rescaled to better fit the packaging’s dimensions. The design was also brought to meet new FDA recommendations.

GOYA de Puerto Rico‘s 2011 architectural redesign relocated the company’s executive offices to the second level of its manufacturing plant. To manage visitor traffic, a secondary waiting space was made.

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of the office’s relocation, an update was envisioned. GOYA asked us to conceptualize a graphic strategy that would let visitors see where its plants and warehouses are located. Using bean cans as positive form, an annotated map was custom weaved for the space. The color palette was updated to contrast/highlight the main slogan.

An architecture school intends to reposition itself as a center from which shifting points of view are experienced by students and faculty alike. Multi-layered camouflage forms a metaphor for an institution on whose shoulders rests the responsibility of defining strategies for the future. As such, it becomes a branding device, one highlighted by its associations with action and intervention.
